Optometrists' Educational Background

An optometrist's education starts with a baccalaureate degree from an undergraduate college or university. Then, if accepted into one of the 17 schools of optometry, he/she has four more years culminating in a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree. The first two years of optometry school mirror the first two years of medical school emphasizing basic sciences. The last two years concentrate on patient care and specialties such as contact lenses, low vision, vision training, and medical treatment of eye diseases.

Optometrists must then pass national and state board licensing tests before they are allowed to go into practice. Continuing education classes must be taken every year to maintain licensure and to stay abreast of current ocular treatment modalities.
