About Optometry

Doctors of optometry are health care professionals that provide eye health and vision examinations, diagnose and treat vision disorders and eye diseases, and evaluate how a patient's systemic health impacts the ocular system. Optometrists are the only health care professionals with a doctorate degree (O.D.) in vision and eyecare. They treat vision problems with glasses and contact lenses as well as prescribe pharmaceuticals related to the medical management of eye diseases. Optometrists also perform certain surgical procedures such as removal of foreign materials from the front of the eye.
